San Francisco Chronicle - 3 questions: Damian Rae Winery's John Tarabini

April 12, 2009

Title: President

Companies: Damian Rae Winery and the San Francisco Wine Association, both in San Francisco

Q: Your winery and the association's wineries are all based inside San Francisco city limits. Why put a winery in a city rather than the countryside? Isn't it a pain?

A: When you think about it, it's a misconception that you need a lot of land to own a winery. What you do need is access to premium grapes, a good winemaker and a top-tier crush facility, which we have in San Francisco. It's a shared facility called Crushpad. Truth be told, there's some serious winemaking here in San Francisco.

Q: Your own winery is on Third Street. Are there any actual advantages to being here in San Francisco?

A: You're close to the gastronomic capital of the world. And you have easy access to the production facilities and distribution outlets. And by just focusing on the winemaking as opposed to the chateaus and waterfalls and gondolas, your customer doesn't have to pay for that.

Our rent is fair, it's a good space, there's storage for the wine, there's parking.

Q: So are we going to see Chateau Dogpatch anytime soon?

A: Yeah, Chateau Power Plant.
